    Madang Province  Papua New Guinea (PNG)
Location
Madang Province in in Papua New Guinea (PNG) is located on the north coast of New Guinea plus offshore islands. The provincial capital is Madang (Madang Town). Madang Province is divided into Rai Coast District, Madang District, Usino Bundi District, Middle Ramu District, Sumkar District and Bogia District. Borders Morobe Province to the southeast, Eastern Highlands Province, Chimbu Province (Simbu) to the south and Western Highlands Province to the southwest, East Sepik Province to the west and Bismarck Sea to the north and Vitiaz Strait to the east. Between 1884 until September 1914 part of Deutsch Neu Guinea (German New Guinea). Prewar and during the Pacific War was known as Madang District in the Territory of New Guinea.

Wartime History
On January 1, 1943 the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA), 18th Army including the 20th Division and 41st Division plus supporting personnel occupied Madang and the surround areas. During April 1943, 18th Army commander Lt. General Hatazo Adachi established his headquarters at Madang until withdrawing to Wewak.

Inland is Dumpu, where the attack on Shaggy Ridge was launched by the Australian Army. As Japanese forces retreated from Lae over the Finnesteire Mountain towards Madang, many died of starvation and disease.

On April 22, 1944 the Madang area was bypassed by the U.S. Army island hopping amphibious landings at Aitape and Hollandia. On April 25, 1944 the Australian Army 7th Division liberated Madang then advanced northward on the north coast road. Afterards, the Madang area was developed into a base area to support the Allied operations.
