Location The Vitiaz Strait is located between the Huon Peninsula on the north coast of New Guinea and the western tip of New Britain. In the center of Vitiaz Strait are several islands including Umboi Island (Rooke, Rook), Sakar Island, Tolokiwa Island, Long Island (Arop, Ahrup, Pono) and Crown Island. Borders Bismarck Sea to the north, Astrolabe Bay to the northwest and Dampier Strait to the northeast and the Solomon Sea and Huon Gulf to the south. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Territory of New Guinea. Today spans Morobe Province and Madang Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
