| Location Kranket Island is located at the eastern edge of Madang Harbor off Madang on the north coast of New Guinea. During the German colonial era, known as Ragetta (Rageta). Pronounced Rag-eta. Also spelled Gragat, a misspelling of the German name. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of Madang District in the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in Madang Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Prewar During the German colonial era, known as Ragetta Island. A Lutheran mission, church and farm was established on the island. In the early 1900s, Lutheran missionary Wilhelm Blum lived on Siar Island and worked on Ragetta Island. Wartime History During early January 1943 occupied by the Japanese Army. During late April 1944 the Australian Army occupied the Madang area including Kranket Island. During 1944, American Graves Registration Service (AGRS) established a headquarters on Kranket Island were U.S. remains recovered from the area were processed and identified before being transported to cemeteries for burial. On March 22, 1945 Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) No. 332 Radar Station (332 RS) from Sio arrived on Kranket Island and operated a radar until the end of the Pacific War.
