| Location The Rai Coast is a portion of the north coast of New Guinea and Long Island. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Madang District of the Territory of New Guinea. Today, the Rai Coast spans Madang District and Rai Coast District of Madang Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Wartime History During late December 1942 or early 1943 the area was occupied by the Japanese Army. During 1943–1944 the Rai coast targeted by Allied aircraft. On December 26, 1943 a U.S. force landed on the northeast coast of Long Island. Starting in January 1944 targeted by Allied bombers and fighters. In early 1944, liberated by U.S. Army advancing from Saidor liberated the Rai Coast from east to west then linked up with the Australian Army.
