Location
Coastwatchers Memorial Lighthouse is located on Kalibobo Point at the eastern edge Madang in Madang Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). To the north is the entrance to Madang Harbor and beyond Karanget Island. To the west is Coronation Drive. To the east is the Bismarck Sea. To the south is Astrolabe Bay. Also known as Kalibobo Lighthouse for Kalibobo Point. Also incorrectly spelled Coast Watchers (two words) Light House (two words).

During June 1953 a committee was formed in Melbourne to raise funds for a memorial to the 28 Coastwatchers that died in New Guinea. A fundraising committee was created in Madang and many Madang Chinese donated to the memorial and the Madang Returned & Services League (RSL). By January 1954 the site for the monument was selected on the southern entrance to Madang Harbor and a 30m / 98.4' white tower was constructed with a light atop.

On August 15, 1959 the Coastwatchers Memorial Lighthouse was dedicated in a ceremony and switched on for the first time by Australian senator John Gorton, minister for the Royal Australian Navy, in the presence of Brigadier D. M. Cleland, administrator of Papua New Guinea, Commander E. Feldt, coastwatcher commander, Captain C. M. White, U.S. Naval attaché in Australia, other officials and local residents plus an estimated 3,000 locals. The light is visible for roughly 25km / 15.5 miles out to sea and serves a reminder to the coastwatchers who stayed behind the lines during the Pacific War to report Japanese troop and ship movements to the Allies.
