    Bawean Island (Pulau Bawean) East Java Province Indonesia
Location
Lat 5° 46' 0S Long 112° 40' 0E. Bawean Island is located in the Java Sea. Approximately 85 miles 140 km south is  Surabaja (Surabaya) on Java. Prewar and during the Pacific War, located in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today located in Gresik Regency, East Java Province (Propinsi Jawa Timur) in Indonesia. Also known as Pulau Bawean in Bahasa Indonesia.

Wartime History

On February 25, 1942 Japanese force land on Bawean Island to establish a radio station for communicaitons duringthe upcoming invasion of Java. On February 26, 1942 submarine S-38 (SS-143) sufaces and bombards the Japanese radio station set up the previous day.

On February 27, 1942 in the afternoon the Battle of the Java Sea occured in the Java Sea south-southwest of Bawean Island. In the evening, west-southwest of Bawean Island. On February 28, 1942 the second phase was the Battle of Sunda Strait in Sunda Strait. On March 1, 1942 was the third phase was the Second Battle of the Java Sea (The Battle off Bawean Island) north of Bawean Island. This was the final engagement in the the three day battle.

HMS Exeter (68)
Sunk March 1, 1942 in the late morning by gunfire and two torpedo from Inazuma and scuttling. Shipwreck discovered February 21, 2007.

HMS Encounter (H10)
Sunk March 1, 1942 in the late morning by gunfire and scuttling. Shipwreck discovered February 21, 2007.

USS Pope (DD-225)
Sunk March 1, 1942 in the early afternoon by D3A Vals, gunfire and scuttling. Shipwreck discovered Dec 2008.
