Location
Kasatka Bay is located at the center of the eastern coast of Iturup
Island. In Japanese known as Hitokappu Bay (Hitokappu Wan) 単冠湾. Prewar until September 1945 part of Japan. During September 1945 occupied by Soviet forces and became part of the Soviet Socialist Republics (Soviet Union). Renamed Kasatka Bay. In Russian, spelled Залив Касатка or Zaliv Kasatka. Today part of the Sakhalin Oblast in Russia.

Wartime History
Prewar and during the Pacific War, Hitokappu Bay was used by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as an anchorage and staging point for early operations. On November 26, 1941 the Combined Fleet strike force of 24 warships including six aircraft carriers for Operation "Z" departs Hitokappu Bay in secrecy steaming eastward across the Pacific Ocean bound for Hawaii for the December 7, 1941 attack against Pearl Harbor and Oahu.
