Location Iturup Island is located in the southwest of the Kurile Islands surrounded by the Sea of Okhotsk. In Japanese known as Etorofu-tō (Etorofu Island). Also spelled Etuworop. In Russian, known as Iturup Island, spelled Итуру́п or Остров Итуру́п. To the northeast is the Vries Strait and beyond is Urup Island (Uruppu, Уру́п). On the eastern center of the island is Kasatka Bay (Hitokappu Bay). Prewar and during World War II, part of Japan. During September 1945 occupied by Soviet forces and became part of the Soviet Socialist Republics (Soviet Union). Today located in Sakhalin Oblast in Russia. Wartime History Part of Japan until the official surrender of Japan on September 2, 1945. During September 1945 occupied by Soviet forces and Japanese residence were expelled and the island became part of the Soviet Union (Russia). Kasatka Bay (Hitokappu Bay 単冠湾) Kasatka Bay is located at the center of Iturup Island.
