| Location Kana Kopa Bay borders Kana Kopa at the southeastern tip of the mainland of New Guinea. Also known as simply Kopa Bay. Border Saraoni Island and beyond Milne Bay. Prewar and during the Pacific War, located in the Eastern District of the Territory of Papua. Today located in Milne Bay Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Also spelled Kana Kope. Wartime History After the battle of Milne Bay, the Kana Kopa area was developed by the U.S. Navy (USN) and Kana Kopa Bay was used as an anchorage for small vessels and later developed into a P. T. Boat base. On April 14, 1943 Allied vessels were anchored off Kana Kopa including USS Hilo (AGP-2) and Moa Moa. In the morning during Operation I-GO, a large formation of Japanese aircraft including G4M1 Betty bombers escorted by A6M Zeros passed over the vessel at 25,500' bound for Milne Bay. During the air raid, Moa Moa was damaged by strafing off Kana Kopa. Kana Kopa PT Boat Base (PT Boat Advance Base Six) Kana Kopa PT Boat Base was located at Kana Kopa at the southeastern end of Milne Bay.
