Location
Madura Island is located to the northeast of Java. Known as Pulau Madura in Indonesian. Also spelled Madoera Island. To the southwest is Surabaja on the northern coast of Java. To the north is the Java Sea. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today part of East Java Province (Propinsi Jawa Timur) in Indonesia.
Wartime History
On February 3, 1942 Japanese Navy planes from 1st Kokutai (1st Air Group) returning from a bombing mission over Malang observe the Allied naval force under Rear Admiral Karel W.F.M. Doorman off Madoera.
