FRIDAY, 6 MARCH 1942
China: General Joseph Stilwell confers for the first time with Chiang Kai-shek in Chungking.
Burma: Newly arrived 63d Brig, under command of Ind 17th Div, makes futile effort to clear block on Rangoon-Pegu road and relieve Pegu garrison, which is isolated. Gen Alexander orders Rangoon evacuated since situation in lower Burma is deteriorating rapidly; denial program is to be put into effect at midnight 6-7.
SOUTHWEST PACIFIC AREA (SWPA, 5th Air Force): 8th Pursuit Group (Interceptor) Headquarters (HQ), 35th Pursuit Squadron (Interceptor), 36th Pursuit Squadron (Interceptor) and 80th Pursuit Squadron (Interceptor) arrives Brisbane from the United States with P-39 Airacobras and P-400 Airacobras with their first combat mission April 30, 1942.
U.S. Army:
Task Force 6814 departs Melbourne bound for New Caledonia.
