Pilot 2nd Lt. Harvey Martin (survived) Ditched June 7, 1942 MACR none Aircraft History Built by Curtiss in Buffalo, New York. Curtiss-Wright Number 563 (CW-563). Constructors Number 16535. On December 15, 1941 delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-40E Warhawk serial number 41-5543. On On December 30, 1941 assigned to "Project X". Disassembled and shipped overseas as cargo bound for the Philippines but while in transit, diverted to Australia arriving January 30, 1942 and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 49th Fighter Group (49th FG), 8th Fighter Squadron (8th) "Black Sheep". Assigned to pilot Lt. Clyde H. Barnett. Nicknamed "Janet". Squadron Number 55. Mission History On June 7, 1942 took off from Darwin piloted by 2nd Lt. Harvey Martin and ditched into shallow water near the Cox Peninsula. On June 16, 1942 officially written off and abandoned. Wreckage Until the late 1970s, this P-40 remained in situ in shallow water at the surf line near the Cox Peninsula. The wreckage included the engine, engine mount and center section.
