Wartime History
On December 22, 1941 personnel transfer from Ft William McKinley to San Marcelino Airfield without aircraft. Meanwhile on December 24, 1941 the air echelon beings operating A-24 Dive Bombers from Brisbane in Australia. On December 25, 1941 the ground echelon begin moving to Cabcaben Airfield on the Bataan Peninsula where they will serve as infantry.
On February 5, 1942 becomes part of the 5th Air Force (5th AF). That same day, the air echelon in Brisbane begins a ferry flight movement across Australia bound for Java. On February 18, 1942 begins operating for Singosari Airfield (Malang) on eastern Java.
On February 20, 1942 seven A-24 Dive Bombers took off from Singosari Airfield (Malang) on a dive bombing mission against the Japanese landing force off Denpasar on southern Bali. Lost is A-24 Dive Bomber 41-15760 pilot 2nd Lt Douglas B. Tubb (MIA) shot down by anti-aircraft fire and and ditched is A-24 Dive Bomber 41-15796 pilot 2nd Richard H. Launder (survived) damaged by anti-aircraft fire.
On March 1, 1942
at the conclusion of the Java campaign, ceases operating for Singosari Airfield (Malang) and begins a movement back to Brisbane in Australia arriving 9 days later. On March 24, 1942 begins a movement to Charters Towers Airfield. On May 4, 1942 without personnel and equipment reestablished at Hunter Field in Savannah, Georgia and will be reequipped
with aircraft and personnel then redeploy to the Mediterranean Theater of Operations (MTO). The air and ground echelons in the Philippines are killed or captured and become Prisoners Of War (POWs) and are carried as active units without
personnel until April 2, 1946.
