Background
The Headquarters Squadron (HQ Squadron) was assigned to the 22nd Bombardment Group (22nd BG). During 1941 operated from Langley Field in Virginia.

Wartime History
At the start of the Pacific War, sent overseas from the United States to Australia.

On February 25, 1942 arrives Brisbane.

On March 7, 1942 moves to Ipswich.

On April 8, 1942 lost is B-26 40-1417 pilot 2nd Lt . Howard A. Hayes (survived) force landed near Vailala a few miles from Kerema in southern New Guinea.

On June 9, 1942 elven B-26 took off on a bombing mission against Lae and Salamaua. Lost is B-26 "The Virginian" 40-1508 pilot 1st Lt. Willis G. Bench (MIA).

On July 5, 1942 moves to Woodstock.

On August 17, 1942 one of ten B-26 Marauders parked at 7 Mile Drome near Port Moresby fully fueled and armed with 500 pound bombs when a Japanese air raid arrived no advanced warning. Lost is B-26 "Shamrock" 40-1437 destroyed by a a direct bomb hit.

During September 1942, the Headquarters Squadron was disbanded and all bombers were assigned to other squadrons in the 22nd Bombardment Group (22nd BG).

On October 15, 1943 moves to Dobodura.

On January 24, 1944 moves to Nadzab Airfield.

On March 15, 1944 moves to Clark Field on Luzon in the Philippines.
