Ship History Built by Vickers-Armstrongs in Barrow-in-Furness in the United Kingdom. Ordered December 8, 1937. Laid down March 24, 1938 as a T-class submarine. Launched May 5, 1939 as HMS Truant (N68). On July 17. 1939 placed under the command of LtCdr Robert W. Peers. Commissioned October 31, 1939 in the Royal Navy (RN) and departs escorted by HMS Shikari bound for Portsmouth, arriving two days later. In early November 1939 conducts exercises off Spithead. On November 12, 1939 departs escorted by HMS Warrior II bound for Portland and continues torpedo trials. Wartime History HMS Truant operates off England and the Mediterranean Sea undertaking 21 war patrols. On January 4, 1942 ordered to proceed to Singapore and departs Alexandria bound for Port Said arriving the next day. On January 11, 1942 departs Port Said and transits the Suez Canal and two days later departs for Aden. On January 25, 1942 arrives Colombo. On February 1, 1942 departs Colombo bound for Batavia on Java as Singapore is under air attack and no longer considered a good submarine base. On February 5, 1942 while surfaced, spotted by a lookout aboard USS Boise (CL-47) and launches a SOC seaplane to investigate causing the submarine to dive then surfaces and exchanges signals with the aircraft and is reported as friendly. On February 18, 1942 departs Surabaya on Java on her 22nd war patrol, her first in the Far East and is ordered to patrol off Bali against the expected Japanese landing. On February 20, 1942 enters the Lombok Strait and spots and evades destroyers. On February 24, 1942 during the Battle of Badung Strait spotted the Japanese covering force and made a torpedo attack against light cruiser Nagara but failed to score any hits but the crew claimed to hear two impacts from dud torpedoes. On April 1, 1942 Truant sinks cargo ships Yae Maru and Shunsei Maru in Malacca Strait approximately 80 miles west-northwest of Penang at roughly Lat 5°42'N Long 98°57'E. During December 1942 began a refit until May 1943 and undertook training exercises including one sortie to search for the German battleship Tirpitz. Ordered back to the Far East be enroute suffered engine trouble and returned to the United Kingdom and remained in home waters until the end of World War II as a trail submarine for test including snorkel tests until the end of World War II.
