Sub History
Built by Kure Naval Arsenal at the Kure Navy Yard in Kure. Laid down June 7, 1939 as Submarine No. 143. Launched September 17, 1940 as I-35. On November 1, 1941 renumbered I-30. Completed and registered in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) attached to Kure Naval District. On March 10, 1942 placed under the command of Commander Shinobu Endo.

Wartime History
On April 11, 1942 departs Kure bound for Penang arriving nine days later. On April 16, 1942 assigned to SubRon 8, "A" (Ko) detachment with I-10, I-16, I-18 and I-20 and support ships Aikoku Maru and Hokoku Maru. On April 22, 1942 departs Penang with Aikoku Maru bound for East Africa. On April 25, 1942 refuels at sea from Aikoku Maru. On May 7, 1942 at dawn sufaces and launches her E14Y1 Glen floatplane to reconnoiter Aden. On May 8, 1942 after sunset, surfaces and launches her E14Y1 Glen floatplane to reconnoiter Djibouti, French Somaliland but over the target is detected and fired on by Allied warships and is forced to abort the mission. On May 20, 1942 conducts a periscope reconnassiance of Kilindini, Mombasa.

PARTIAL HISTORY

Sinking History
On October 13, 1942 at 4:09pm departs Singapore bound for Kure. While underway roughly 3 miles east of Keppel Harbo, hit a British sea mine and quickly sank with the loss 13 aboard. On April 15, 1944 officialy removed from the Navy list.

Rescue
After the sinking, 96 of the crew are rescued including Commander Shinobu Endo.

Shipwreck
After the sinking, salvaged by No. 101 Navy Repair Unit divers that recover some of her cargo, including most of the 20 mm guns, torpedo data computers, and radar blueprints but they were unusable after their immersion in salt water. The German Würzburg radar equipment was completely destroyed. During August 1959 until February 1960 salvaged by Hokusei Sempaku Kogyo K.K. and sold for scrap.
