Sub History Built by 'P' Naval Armory (Ōurasaki) during 1943 as the 49th Type A Kō-hyōteki-class midget submarine completed then rebuilt as as one of five Type B Kō-hyōteki otsu-gata: HA-49, HA-50, HA-51, HA-52 and HA-53. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as HA-49 Type B Midget Submarine under the command of Lt (jg) Shiro Mashima for assignment to Rabaul. Wartime History On January 2, 1944 departs Kure towed by Neikai Maru bound for Rabaul in convoy no. O-707 with Toko Maru, Kofuku Maru Manshu Maru and Kennichi Maru escorted by destroyer Shiranuhi, torpedo boat Hato and auxiliary minesweepers Tama Maru No. 7 and Takunan Maru No. 3. via Saeki bound for the South Pacific. On January 16, 1944 arrives Palau. On January 19, 1944 departs Palau with convoy no. SO-903 with Nipponkai Maru and Takatori Maru No. 2 escorted by subchasers CH-17 and CH-18 bound for Rabaul. Sinking History On January 28, 1944 Neikai Maru towing HA-49 is targeted by B-24 Liberators from 13th Air Force and U.S. Navy PBY Catalina and sunk south of Kavieng approximately 75 miles south of Queen Charlotte Island at roughly Lat 03°45'S, Long 150°38'.
