Ship History Built by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation at Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts. Laid down March 27, 1940 as an Atlanta-class light cruiser. Launched July 26, 1941 as USS San Diego named for San Diego sponsored by Grace Legler Benbough. Commissioned January 10, 1942 in the U.S. Navy (USN). During World War II, San Diego steamed over 300,000 nautical miles, engaged the enemy on 34 different occasions, and never lost a man. Postwar On March 18, 1949 redesignated USS San Diego CLAA-53. On March 1, 1959 stricken off charge. Fate On February 3, 1960 sold for scrap. During December 1960 broken up. Awards For her World War II service, USS San Diego earned 18 battle stars for service from Guadalcanal to Tokyo Bay. Memorial The USS San Diego Memorial to the ship and her crew is located in San Diego.
