Ship History Built by by Sun Shipbuilding & Drydock Corporation in Chester, Pennsylvania. Laid down 21 February 1932 as a transport. Launched September 19, 1932 as SS Seatrain New York for Seatrain Lines, Inc. On June 25, 1941 acquired by the U.S. Navy (USN) for conversion into a Transport and Aircraft Ferry. On July 8, 1941 renamed USS Kitty Hawk for Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Converted into an aircraft transport by Tietjin & Land Dry Dock Corporation in Hoboken, New Jersey. Commissioned November 26, 1941 as USS Kitty Hawk (APV-1) at New York Navy Yard. Afterwards, undergoes a brief shakedown cruise. Wartime History On December 16, 1941 departs New York with a cargo of aircraft via the Panama Canal bound for Hawaii. On February 8, 1942 arrives Pearl Harbor and her aircraft unloaded at Hickam Field then departs for the west coast. On May 17, 1942 returns to Pearl Harbor and is loaded with personnel, armament, and cargo of the 3rd Marine Defense Battalion and aircraft from Marine Air Group 21 (MAG-21) and Marine Air Group 45 (MAG-45) then departs at top speed escorted by destroyer USS Gwin bound for Midway Atoll. En route, a PBY Catalina reported a submarine in the area which Gwin drove off with depth charges. On May 26, 1942 arrives Midway and unloads and delivers her aircraft ahead of the Battle of Midway. On May 29, 1942 departs Midway escorted by USS Gwin and USS Sicard and returns to Honolulu on June 1, 1942. On June 5, 1942 departs for the west coast bound for San Diego arriving eight days later. PARTIAL HISTORY On September 15, 1943 redesignated as aircraft transport USS Kitty Hawk (AKV-1). PARTIAL HISTORY Postwar On January 24, 1946 decommissioned in New York and the same day returned to Seatrain Lines, Inc. Leased to United Fruit Company and reverts to her original name SS Seatrain New York. Fate During March 1973 sold to Hua Eng Copper and Iron Industrial Company Limited of Taiwan and afterwards broken up for scrap.
