Sun Setters of the Southwest Pacific Area From Australia To Japan: An Illustrated History of the 38th Bombardment Group (M) 5th Air Force World War II 1941-1946 As Told and Photographed by Men Who Were There This book is a comprehensive history of the 38th Bombardment Group (38th BG) "Sun Setters" in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) during World War II. This book was published by the 38th Bombardment Group Association, based off the text written by Lawrence J. Hickey / IHRA with Japanese side research by Osamu Tagaya. Prewar, the 38th Bombardment Group (38th BG) included the Headquarters Squadron, 69th Bombardment Squadron (69th BS), 70th Bombardment Squadron (70th BS) and 71st Bombardment Squadron (71st BS) "The Wolf Pack" and 15th Reconnaissance Squadron. During April 1942, the 15th Reconnaissance Squadron was redesignated as the 405th Bombardment Squadron (405th BS) "The Green Dragons". In late February 1943, the 69th Bombardment Squadron (69th BS) and 70th Bombardment Squadron (70th BS) were transfered out of the group to the 42nd Bombardment Group (42nd BG) for the remainder of the Pacific War. On April 20, 1943 activated in the 38th Bomb Group was the newly formed 822nd Bombardment Squadron (822nd BS) "The Black Panthers" and 823rd Bombardment Squadron (823rd BS) "The Terrible Tigers". This book includes several extra appendixes plus a color photo section. The end of the book includes appendixes including: A-I list of leadership including group and squadron commanders and their dates, A-II chronological list of losses, A-III list of aircraft by squadron and serial number, A-IV aircraft markings and A-V aircraft profiles. The book ends with an index. The cover artwork "Alcohol Busters of Formosa" by Steve Ferguson depicts the May 29, 1955 low level bombing mission by B-25J Mitchells from 823rd Bombardment Squadron (823rd BS) "The Terrible Tigers" against Tairin Alcohol Plant on Formosa (Taiwan). This artwork is one of four limited edition art prints for sale depicting historic missions by each of the 38th Bomb Group's four squadrons. A revised and expanded book: Saga of the Sun Setters: The Illustrated History of the 38th Bombardment Group During World War II Volume I: Prewar to September 1943 is being produced by International Historical Research Associates (IHRA).
