Background
Alexander McCarrell Patch was born November 23, 1889 at Fort Huachuca in the Arizona Territory.
Wartime History
During November 1941 promoted to the rank of Major General and became the Commanding Officer (C.O.) of Task Force 6814, a hastily assembled division composed of two U.S. Army National Guard infantry regiments until the U.S. entry into World War II. In early 1942 departs bound for the South Pacific. On March 12, 1942 Task Force under the command of Brigadier General Alexander M. Patch with 17,500 personnel arrive at Nouméa on New Caledonia. On May 24, 1942 became the Commanding Officer (C.O.) of the 23rd Infantry Division (23rd ID) "Americal Division".
Memorials
On November 21, 1945 died of pneumonia at age 55 at Brooke General Hospital at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
He is buried at U.S. Military Academy Post Cemetery (West Point Cemetery) at section I, row C, plot 58. On July 19, 1954 Patch was promoted posthumously promoted to the rank of full general.
