Background
William Daniel Leahy was born May 6, 1875 to parents Michael Arthur Leahy and Rose Mary “Rosa” Hamilton Leahy in Hampton, Iowa.
Wartime History
On April 17, 1942 recalled as U.S. Ambassador to France to Washington D.C. for consultation. During World War II, Leahy was Chief of Staff to President of the United States (POTUS) Franklin D. Roosevelt and presided over the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). On May 1, 1942 Admiral William D. Leahy, USN (Ret.) ends his service as U.S. Ambassador to Vichy France.
On
December 15, 1944 the newly created rank of five star Fleet Admiral is bestowed on Fleet Admiral William D. Leahy.
Memorials
Leahy died July 20, 1959 in Bethesda, Maryland at age 84. On July 12, 1959 he was buried with full military honros at Arlington National Cemetery at section 2, site 932.
Awards
Leahy earned three Distinguished Service Medals (DSM) and the Sampson Medal.
