| Location Sudest Island the largest island in the Louisiade Archipelago roughly 225 miles southeast of New Guinea. Named by European explorers "Sudest". Also known as "Tagula". Known to local people as "Vanatinai". The island has an area of 310 square miles and is surrounded by a fringing coral reef. Mount Riu (Mount Rattlesnake) with an elevation of 2,644' is the island's highest peak. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in Milne Bay Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Buiawe (Buyawe) Village located on the southeast coast of Sudest Island.
