| Location Lat 2° 4' 0S Long 147° 37' 60E Pak Island is located in the Admiralty Island Group (Admiralty Islands). To the west is Los Negros and beyond Manus Island. To the southeast is Rambutyo Island. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in Manus Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Wartime History On April 9, 1944 U.S. Army 12th Calvary, 1st Squadron landed on Pak Island. The next day they located three Japanese who had had already become Prisoner Of War (POW) on Rambutyo and escaped by native canoe. On April 12, 1944 other Japanese were found on the eastern end of Pak and eliminated including eight in a large coral cave where they were hiding and fought until the cave was blown in on them by a demolition charge placed by the 8th Engineers.
