| Location Homonhon Island is part of Eastern Samar Province off the southeast tip of Samar Island in the Philippines. Borders Leyte Gulf to the west. Wartime History On October 18, 1944 the U.S. Army, Sixth Army, 6th Ranger Battalion, Company B land on Homonhon Island without opposition. The landing was scheduled for the previous day but was delayed due to bad weather and rough seas. Ashore, the Rangers set up navigation lights for the invasion fleet, with Captain Arthur Simons leading the mission with the lights operational on the same day as the landing and could be seen for ten miles.
