During the Pacific War, known as "Japen" by the Americans. In Indonesian known as Pulau Yapen. Wartime History During the Pacific War occupied by the Japanese. During the middle of 1944, Allied aircraft flew combat missions over Yapen Island. Portions of Yapen were occupied by the Japanese until Japan surrendered.
