Location Tern Island is the largest island at the northern end of the French Frigate Shoals in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands (Leeward Islands) of Hawaii surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. Prewar and during World War II part of the Territory of Hawaii. Today part of Honolulu County in the State of Hawaii in the United States. Wartime History During World War II, occupied by the U.S. Navy (USN). During 1943, Naval Construction Battalion (NCB) "Seabees" enlarged Tern Island and built Tern Island Airfield. Postwar The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) operated on Tern Island. Today Tern Island is administered by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Tern Island Airfield Island enlarged during the war for a single runway.
