| Location Kauaʻi Island (Kauai) is the fourth largest of the main islands in the Southeast Islands (Windward Islands) of Hawaii. Also spelled Kauai in English. Also known as "Garden Isle". To the southeast is the Kauai Channel (Kauaʻi Channel, Kaʻieʻie Waho Channel) and beyond Oahu. To the southwest is the Kaulakahi Channel and roughly 17 miles away is Niʻihau Island (Niihau). Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the Territory of Hawaii. Today part of Kauaʻi County of Hawaii in the United States of America. Barking Sands Airfield (Pacific Missile Range Facility) Located at Barking Sands used by fighters and bombers during the war today a missle range Kahala Point Borders Anahola Bay on the northeast of Kauai. Nawiliwili On December 30, 1941 after sunset off Japanese submarine I-3 conducted a periscopic reconnaissance off Nawiliwili of Nawiliwili Bay of the Wailua River estuary then after sundown surfaces and fired twenty 5.5" HE shells at the breakwater and a nearby building identified as a warehouse. Most of the shells fell short of the target and ashore only one house was damaged by shell fragments. A shell perforated a large gasoline storage tank, but failed to explode.
