    Hainan Island (Hainan Dao) Hainan Province China
Location
Hainan Island is located in Hainan Province off the southern coast of China. Also known as "Hai-Nan" or "Hainan Dao". Borders Tsinghai Bay on the northern shore and the Gulf of Tonking and South China Sea. Postwar, the Chinese Nationalist Party reestablished control, of Hainan until 1950 when they withdrew. Afterwards, occupied by Communist China. Today located in Hainan Province in China.

Wartime History
On February 9, 1939 after midnight a Japanese Navy South China Naval Force (Fifth Fleet) entered Tsinghai Bay (Qinghai Bay) and made an amphibious landing on the northern coast of Hainan Island. On February 10, 1939 at noon the Japanese Navy also landed at Haikou. On February 11, 1939 the Japanese also landed at Samah (Sanya) on southern Hainan and occupied Yulin and Yai-Hsien. Afterwards, the Japanese occupied the all key locations on the island. Meanwhile, the Chinese forces withdraw into the central Wuzhi Range at the center of the island.

During the Japanese occupation, Chinese Communists and the Li natives led by Feng Baiju led the Hainan Independent Column. In retaliation, the Japanese killed over a third of the adult male population to suppress any resistance. During late 1943 until the end of the Pacific War targeted by Allied planes. Occupied by the Japanese until the official surrender of Japan in September 1945.

Haikou
Located on the northern coast of Hainan Island.

Samah (Sanya)
Located on the southern coast of Hainan Island borders Samah Bay.

Bakli
Located on the western coast of Hainan Island bordering Bakli Bay. Included Bakli Bay POW Camp.

Kiungshan (Qiongshan)
Located on the northern coast of Hainan Island.

Yulin
Yulin is located on the southern tip of Hainan Island. Borders Yulin Bay. Also known as Yulin Harbor (Youlin) or Yulin Kan Bay.
