MONDAY, 8 JUNE 1942

Burma: A single B-25 from 11th BS (Medium) piloted by Colonel Caleb V Haynes (C.O.) strikes a Japanese Headquarters at Tengchung near the Burma border. After this mission, bad weather, pilot fatigue and maintenance halt major operations for several days.

ALASKA (11th Air Force): LB-30 flies an armed patrol over Kiska and Umnak and spots Japanese ships off Kiska Harbor.

5th Air Force: P-400 pilot Cantello (KIA) crashed after takeoff.

U.S. Army: General Douglas MacArthur proposes to the Army Chief of Staff that a limited offensive to regain positions in the Bismarck Archipelago be undertaken.

U.S. Navy: Tug Vireo (AT-144) is damaged by grounding at Midway.

British armed merchant cruiser HMS Alcantara embarks survivors from damaged U.S. freighter George Cylmer; attempts to scuttle the freighter prove futile and Alcantara must leave on June 12 with the ship still afloat.
