SUNDAY, 10 MAY 1942
Burma: Japanese attack the British Army covering force at Shwegyi.
SOUTHWEST PACIFIC AREA (5th Air Force): B-17's attack Kessa in the North Solomon. B-25s from 3rd BG and B-26s from 22nd BG strike Deboyne Seaplane Base. Lost is B-26 40-1402 pilot Captain Richard “Roy” R. Royall, Jr. (MIA) and B-25C "El Diablo" 41-12511 pilot 1st Lt. Harold "Hal" V. Maull ditched while returning with the entire crew rescued.
U.S. Army: The last U.S. Army forces in the Philippines officially surrender including the remainder of the Visayan-Mindanao Force and small groups of Allied personnel on Luzon and Palawan.
U.S. Navy: USS Ranger (CV-4) on a transatlantic ferry voyage reaches a position off the
African Gold Coast and launched sixty P-40 Warhawks bound for Accra where they will fly a series of ferry flights bound for Karachi where they will join 10th Air Force (10th AF). This was the first of four ferry trips made by
Ranger to deliver Army fighters with subsequent
launches on July 19, 1942, January 19, 1943 and February
24, 1943.
USN: Inshore Patrol Squadron VS-4-D14 arrived in the Tonga with the
base construction and garrison convoy and set up facilities to conduct antisubmarine
patrols from Nukualofa Harbor on Tongatabu.
