| Location Lat 33° 32' 6N Long 112° 22' 59W Luke Field is located at an elevation of 1,085' above sea level west of Glendale and Phoenix in Arizona in the United States. Still in use today as Luke Air Force Base (Luke AFB). Construction During 1940, the U.S. Army Air Corps (USAAC) sent a representative to Arizona to choose a location for an airfield for advanced flight training. On March 24, 1941, the City of Phoenix leased the land to the government for a dollar a year for a military airfield. On March 29, 1941 Del. E. Webb Construction Company bgan construction of what was to be named Litchfield Park Airfield. Named Luke Field in honor of 2nd Lt. Frank Luke who earned the Meda of Honor and was the U.S. second highest ace in World War I. Wartime History On June 6, 1941 the first advanced flight training class 41-F arrived at Luke Field flying the AT-6 Texan. As the base only had a few buildings, they began flying at Sky Harbor Airport (Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport) until the airfield and facilities were completed. On August 15, 1941 the first class graduated. During 1942, Captain Barry Goldwater was director of ground training. Today Still in use today as Luke Air Force Base (Luke AFB).
