Pilot Sgt Max Holdsworth, 411067 (survived) Sydney, NSW Ditched March 2, 1943 Aircraft History Built by Curtiss in Buffalo, New York. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-40K-10-CU Kittyhawk serial number 42-10197. Disassembled and shipped overseas to Australia. Wartime History During January 1943, assigned to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as P-40K Kittyhawk serial number A29-188. Reassembled by 2 Air Depot (2 AD. On February 22, 1943 assigned and delivered to No. 77 Squadron. No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On March 2, 1943 took off piloted by Sgt Max Holdsworth on a mission and had a fuel system failure that resulted in no pressure on the gauge and caused an engine failure. This Kittyhawk ditched wheels up at the northern end of China Strait to the southeast of Milne Bay. Officially, this P-40 was written off May 26, 1943. Fate of the Pilot Holdsworthy survived unhurt and later returned to duty.
